Christmas Gifts: Do They Really Bring Joy to Everyone? ctd...

It is amazing and appalling how so many workers, both here in the United States and globally are mistreated and cheated out of the salary they deserve. Sometimes it is hard for us, the consumers, to see the face on the other end. This is a result of ignorance, whether we chose to ignore the fact that many goods come from sweatshops or places where workers are exploited, or whether we do not know because this fact is rarely publicized or reported. No matter what the reason, the problem is ubiquitous.

  1. Lindsay! I totally agree! It is very easy for us to forget who made the item we are buying. Sometimes, another person might point it out to us, but we just want to forget about it because it is the "perfect gift." If we know that the workers who made the product we are buying are mistreated, then we are just as bad as the people who are paying the workers a horrible wage or mistreating them. Everyone should think about standing up and refusing to buy products that are made by workers who are not treated properly.

  2. I never thought of gifts this way! Its such a true issue. If more people brought attention to this problem, then maybe sweat shops could somehow be eliminated or at least brought down in numbers. Thanks for opening my eyes to such a serious issue!

  3. This is a very interesting topic Lindsay. Isn't Christmas meant for the joy of everyone, or does Santa discriminates between people? Everyone needs to think about this issue. Being a human we should care about others happiness too. Being a part of the society we cant just be happy just by ourselves, we need to think about other people too. Christmas should be a festival where happiness is shared and everyone can have a smile on their face.

  4. I agree with you, I never think of christmas gifts as being anything but joyous and fun, but there are a lot of people who are suffering and being treated unfairly because of our desire to have more and more and give more and more. We get lots of joy out of the holidays, but there are so many other people who are having the opposite feeling.

  5. Around the holidays people are so wraped up in the emotion of the holiday and all the frantic running around for gifts that they look past where the gifts actually are coming from. It isn't right but come christmas time, because of how our society is today, people are not going to do much about this problem because they have so much going on and are just looking to enjoy this time of year.
